FAQs

We know that investing in solar energy can be a big decision, and you likely have a lot of questions about the process. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about solar installation:

Q: Why solar?

A: Over the past five years, there have been significant improvements in the quality of solar modules (panels) and a corresponding drop in the cost per panel. As a result, an increasing number of homes are now excellent candidates for solar installation. Bend, Oregon is a particularly attractive location for solar due to its abundance of clear and mostly sunny days, with an average of 158 and 105 days, respectively. Additionally, colder temperatures can actually increase solar efficiency during the winter months, making solar an even more viable option in Bend.

Q: How long does the installation process take?

A: Once we determine that your home is a good candidate for solar, we will provide you with a preliminary bid that includes an estimate of your power and energy savings, as well as any rebates and incentives that you may qualify for. If you decide to move forward, we will begin the process of installing the system on your roof.

Unlike some competitors, we do not begin installation until all permits and reservations from Utility Providers are approved. This typically takes one to two months. Once we ensure that all designs, permitting, and rebate reservations are in place, we prepare your materials, roofers, and electricians to install the system. This can take one to three weeks.

At E2, we never use subcontractors to install our systems, and we never dropship solar equipment to our customers. We take pride in our work and want to ensure that every installation is done to the highest standards. Residential building installations are typically completed in less than two days, and we will work efficiently and diligently to ensure that your installation is done right the first time.

Q: How do I know if my home is a good fit for solar panels?

A: We'll start by assessing your home's energy needs and evaluating your roof's orientation and shading. From there, we'll create a customized solar energy plan that works for you. Different energy providers in Central Oregon have wildly different policies for “banking” solar power. We can help you decide if solar is a good fit for your home.

Q: Why do I need to provide a copy of my energy bill?

A: We want to be as accurate as possible, and energy bills provide us with clear information we can use to create the most efficient system tailored to your needs. All your information is secure and confidential, we will never sell your information.

Q: Do I need to get any permits for solar installation?

A: Yes. We will communicate on your behalf with local Inspection agencies, your energy providers, and any rebates you’re eligible for, alongside your individual needs (car charging stations, HOA compliance, etc.).

Q: What are the most common reasons people are disqualified?

A: Unfortunately, not every roof makes sense for solar. Things like size, pitch, shading, orientation, and roof material will all factor in to if a solar system is right for you. Roof age is also important, we want to help you avoid the additional costs that come from installing solar on older roofs.

Q: Why is my home disqualified when another solar installer told me it’s fine?

A: In order to make more sales, many companies have lenient policies related to where they will install solar. This often creates long-term problems. (For instance, installing solar on a pole barn without the correct plans in place could lead you to being unable to pass inspection and utilize your power.) On the other hand, we encourage our customers to only install solar if it will meet their expectations over the long term.

Q: Why is a NABCEP certification important?

A: A NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification is important because it ensures that the individual holding the certification has met rigorous standards of training and experience in the solar energy industry. Specifically, a NABCEP Solar Specialist Certification demonstrates that the individual has demonstrated a high level of knowledge and expertise in the design and installation of solar energy systems, and has passed a comprehensive exam that tests their knowledge of industry best practices and standards.

Holders of this certification are recognized as professionals in the solar industry and are considered the best qualified to design and install solar energy systems in compliance with relevant codes and safety standards. In addition, they are expected to uphold ethical standards and continue their professional development through ongoing education and training.

Q: Why don’t you offer low-budget solar module options?

A: The quality of solar panels can significantly impact the performance, durability, and lifespan of your solar energy system. High-quality panels from reputable manufacturers are designed to last for decades and come with strong warranties. They typically have a higher efficiency rating, which means they can produce more power in a smaller space and under different lighting conditions. Cheaper and lower-quality panels may seem like a good deal at first, but they can be prone to defects, degradation, and reduced efficiency over time. Ultimately, investing in quality solar panels can ensure that your system performs optimally, saves you more money on energy bills in the long run, and reduces your carbon footprint.

Q: Will solar affect my homes value?

A: Yes! Research has shown that the average residential solar array will add around $15,000 to a home’s value.

Q: Are you an Energy Trust of Oregon trade ally contractor?

A: Yes, we are one of only three licensed installers in Bend. This means we can offer you more financial incentives via Energy Trust. Energy Trust has extremely thorough installation quality requirements and is another guarantee that your design is up to the highest standards.
